KOLKATA JAM MASALA – Indian psyche, improvisation, AV performance : a thrilling experience !

7 pm onwards | Sunday, 7th May 2017 | at blueFROG

KJM is a music band exploring Indian ragas with a pinch of rock’n’roll and psychedelia. Far from a consensual fusion, KJM incorporates technical excellence to create an exciting and passionate music. On one hand, there is Indian classical virtuoso and on second hand, there are musicians from the rock, and psychedelic jazz scene. More than a fusion, it can be called contemporary Indian music. In this project, tracks are improvised on Indian modes (ragas), no more indication are given to musicians. During live concerts, musicians play in a sponteneous way. The driving force behind KJM’s music is to bring out an artist’s honest expression at a given moment and thus going beyond the established structures or paradigms of music. As a “Bitches Brew” (Miles Davis) for the African American jazz, KJM explores the Indian psychedelia with an endless pleasure and the result is stunning. The spiritual aspect of traditional music is maintained but the shape is discussed, revised and polyphony exacerbated.

SANJUKTA – BLT

BLT Presents Sanjukta, a workshop production to promote new voices in theatre. BLT has a long track record of encouraging new writing for the stage. There has also been active support for new directors. Sanjukta presents Bangalore audiences both a new script and a new director. The Bangalore theatre community is already aware of the Directors Training programmes offered by BLT. We may look forward to a more formal training opportunity for writers in playwriting and dramaturgy too in the near future. Preparations are on for a really professional course with international collaborations.

Synopsis:

Sanjukta-Written & Directed by Viji Sashikant

Sanjukta is single, unmarried, a lawyer in a large law firm and lives with her elderly mother and a younger unmarried sister. Sanju (as she is called) is fairly content with her life – she is the ‘man of the house’ and attends to typical male chores like banking, car repair, etc., leaving the household tasks to her mother and sister.

Though a partner in a prestigious law firm, Sanju is not stylish. She is invariably dressed in unbecoming functional clothes with her hair in a pony tail. She is not a prude or old-maidenly, but she hasn’t had romance in her life.

Her younger sister Meera has been having an office affair for several years. Suddenly, she announces that she is getting married. Sanjukta is 39 and realizes that Meera would leave and when her mother passed away, she would be all alone.

Her best friend Parveen is an incurable romantic and has spent the better part of 10 years trying to find a suitable match for Sanju. She now urges Sanju to advertise in the newspaper for a groom.

Between surprise from her mother, contempt from her sister and a push from Parveen, Sanju meets 3 of the men who have answered her ad.  Will she find Mr Right?

The play is set in the mid-90s.

Date and Time:

May 26th, May 27th, May 28th

HISTOIRES VRAIES: Cécile Loyer

1st JULY 2017 / 7 PM / AF AUDITORIUM

FREE AND OPEN FOR ALL

Histoires Vraies (True story) questions, above all, the origin of movement and its transmission.

Cécile Loyer combines two highly different traditions and conceptions of body. For one tradition, the body is a receptacle of history, carrying forward traces; for the other, it is a ‘forgetter’ (Salman Rushdie).
Histoires Vraies tries to reinvent dance based on these perspectives from two cultures.

On stage, two Indian dancers and two European dancers will testify and narrate their stories to shift, move and change roles… This chaos of movements that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere is strange and sometimes funny, and makes us feel our collective history. Through signs, poses and representations, can dance reveal different conceptions of history, conceptions that are less perceptible but more significant?

Girish Karnad’s play Tughlaq explores the character of one of the most fascinating kings to occupy the throne in Delhi, namely, Mohammed-bin-Tughlaq. He ruled for 26 years, a period of unparalleled cruelty and agonising existence for his subjects.
He’s fascinating because though he was one of the most learned monarchs of Delhi, and had great ideas and a grand vision, his reign was also an abject failure. He started his rule with great ideals — of a unified India, of Hindus and Muslims being equal in the eyes of the state (he abolished the onerous tax Jaziya on the Hindus) and the Sultan being the first among equals. He understood the value of money as not deriving from its intrinsic worth but from the promise behind it: and introduced copper coins. Yet in 20 years his reign had degenerated into an anarchy and his kingdom had become a “kitchen of death”. Girish Karnad’s play explores why this happened.

YOUNG TALENT PROGRAM

6PM onwards / 21st of July / Alliance Française Atrium

Press It!

When I go to Kala Bhavana, the Tagore founded art school in Santaniketan, there is a place I never forget to visit: the printmaking department. I have a fascination for the press they use, the smell of the various inks, the papers that are all around, the prints that are discarded and those that are carefully kept in the especially designed chests of drawers. I had also noticed there is always a bunch of students around, chatting, discussing, getting a tip. The place being dedicated to paper works makes it very special, a sort of concentrate of experiences. I can easily imagine Ashmita Mondal exploring the art of lithography with her peers and her teachers. I can also easily imagine her being well motivated, perhaps inspired, by the artists who worked on the presses before her: KG Subramaniam, Sanat Kar, Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar, Somnath Hore, etc. Sometimes, a teacher comes and shows the lucky visitor a well-kept lithograph done by one the school’s legends, a treasure made out of memories.

In Press It!, the artist selected four bodies of works. The Truck series, inspired by the colourful roads of India i.e. what Mondal must had seen on the roads and on the roads sides throughout her life. She uses the back of the truck as a screen where she projects the mundane, a miniature type landscape or a scene from the Mahabharata. Deshavatar gives life to different avatars of Vishnu. She creates an interesting context where the techniques (embossing, printing, painting) help seeing through the complex personality of the god. Perhaps a frustrated or a talented poker player, the artist illustrated a royal family in the Play series, a winning royal family obviously backed up by well wishing gods. Mondal’s Divinityseries is perhaps the most humoristic and sarcastic of the lot. Blending the Amul popular brand culture with symbols of the holy cows, the young artist incorporates the archaic in the modern with a noted freedom of speech.

What I find interesting in Press It! is the subtle balancing of a technically talented young artist between classical representations and attempts to break away from the well accepted imagery of her culture. Showing her works and getting feedbacks from a wider audience will surely help Mondal find a strong and personal way to move forward and affirm her style. This is just a beginning !
